my EFII idles like absolute crap, its only happened just suddenly. I did the water pump replacement and worked really well, but a few days later the idling started going bad then worse each day, now I cant drive it. I suspect the idle control throttle has blown its gasket, its the only thing I can think of that would produce such a nasty idle.

Does anyone know step by step how to reset the computer after I find & fix the idler problems?

also, can anyone tell me what the little knob does on the side of the idle control throttle? and how to reset it?

I have an EF Fairmont wagon with auto trans, the same thing happened to it at 160,000 k's and it ended up being the tranny computer, $300 later it was fixed

don't the ef auto's have an intergrated computer for the engine and trans? the ecu?

Yep they do Yagz, but I'd assume there'd be a chip in there that could go bonkers. Highly unlikely though I guess.

bobsmith, it probably is your ISC motor, the little cylinder thing on the top of throttle body. Take that off and give it a thorough clean, and check that the connections are ok.

You checked your head gasket? Also you didn't spill any water on the coil/distributor did oyu?

Yep, the EF I6 transmission thingos are combined in the main PCM (ECU), the V8 has a seperate transmission computer.

About the idling problem, are there any codes being set? Good place to start is to check for fault codes.

Sorry about the confusion, the Powertrain Control Module is what I was on about. I couldn't think of the real name at the time. The dealer checked the codes and that's what the problem was.

I know this is a silly question but the water hasn't all leaked out through a bad seal on the new pump has it?

I had a bad idle for a little while, which lead to head gasket death (or was part thereof).

Now runs like a beauty... smooth as.
