my brother just got an ED xr6 computer for his pre smartlock EBII to help with the bigger cam. is there a way of overriding the smartlock so it will work on a non smartlock car? thanks

Yeah. Install Smartlock.

The easiest possible way is to use an EBII or ED dash. It'll bolt and plug straight in and should cost around $50 with no cluster or climate unit.

thats a bit of work, i dont think he would wana stuff around changing a dash just to get the computer going. there has to be a way to make the computer think that smartlock is disenguaged all the time.

Would have thought you could put a jumper across the pins on the ECU or even wire the pin up to 12v acc so it disengages when you turn the car on. Anyone?
I'm under the impression it is like an immobiliser for the ECU. As soon as you kick the ignition over there's a circuit to power it up. Can anybody explain how it works.

Ford sell units that remove Smartlock. Expect to pay a few hundred for them though.

Smartlock sends the ECU a data signal, good luck cracking it.

It's a square wave signal, that's about the extent of my knowledge.
Shouldn't take more than an hour or two to change the dash EF_Dave. It's just 4 bolts, two nuts, two Torx screws, and 5 Phillips screws. Plus all the plugs.

One ED or EBII dash with Smartlock unit. The cluster would be nice due to having the light, but it's not essential. Perhaps the wrecker will swap you a cluster if you take everything out so he doesn't have to bother with it
Realistically, it doesn't even have to be in good condition as the dash wiring is all you need --> about 10min to swap that over.
Oh and possibly some time to swap the plug for your CD player.
