Im about to do my 100,000 km service on my EL Ghia (XR-6 Motor remember)
I would like to run a synthetic oil, but dont know which one to run there are so many. I will run a lot of flushing oil through the motor first to clean all the crap out since it has only been running on mineral oils before i assume
Pls give me some suggestions. The timing cover has a minor weep that i dont want to make any bigger so i dont want to go to thin and let it piss out oil everywhere
from searching the other posts i seems to be shell helix, mobil 1,or castrol are the favourites but this dosent mtake it any easier for me to choose and i also like penrite or pennzoil
I will run a K&N Gold Performance filter
Thanks
Ash

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 ---- W 16 Configuration, Quad Turbo 1001 HP, 1250Nm, 4 Wheel Drive
Any of the brands you mentioned will do fine.
I run Castrol but only because it was what I wanted at the right price. Either way, in 5000kms it all gets flushed out anyway.
Try flushing your engine with Diesel, sound odd, but it works(PM me for more info).
I have run my XR6 on both Shell helix Plus, and Caltex Havoline Formula 3, They arnt fully synthetic, but are semi synthetic, and they are both very good.
I try to steer clear of Castrol, my engine runs like a slug with it in.
And change the oil every 5000ks.
Why change to synthetic? The only reason for this is if you want extended drain intervals, 15,000 k's or so. If you are changing synthetic oil out at 5,000 k's you are just wasting your money. Stick with a good A3 rated dino oil. Invest the money you save in a quality carton of cold beer.
The K&N filter is a good one, not as restrictive as some.
cheers

hey guys, a bit off the topic but i thought you might be able to help, ford the k&n oil filters, they list one for falcons, all 6 cyls are the same, as with the old 302c. (ive got a 351) and they dont list a filter. obviously it would be the same filter but why dont they use it for the 351?
also i agree, castrol used to be good oil, now is cheap cold-blended stuff. go penrite. (havent used halvolene) and shell synthetic works good in my old mans vet.
Well, I'm not going to use Castrol again. Not happy with it. Today I went out and got Shell Ultra for under $50 for 5 litres. Not too bad.
I dont mind paying a bit more for oil, I figure and extra $10 for top of the range is worth it.
If they are the same size, you can use it, no difference I can see. The 351 might have needed a lower by-pass valve setting, but I'm sure they all survived on Z9's anyway, so go ahead and use it.
The best oil filter you can use in a Ford is the Wix brand, or a Baldwin B-2. Both have the bypass valve at the thread end, as per the original Ford specs.
The mob who make the Z9's (GUD?) are importing them to sell alongside the Z9, which is bloody decent of them.
cheers
