General TechHave a question that is not covered by one of the other categories? This is the forum for all other items not specifically covered in other categories.
Ive done a bit of searching round the forums but cant seem to find what im looking for.
Im looking at putting a 2500-3000rpm stall in my ED. Has anyone on here had any experience with stalls in these falcons?
How do they handle day to day? a mate of mine has a VP SS with a 2500 stall in it and when he takes off you have to wait for the smoke to clear to see which way he went. Considering my car can claw its way in front in a rolling start, i want a slice of the fun to!
Is it also true that a trans oil cooler will be required?
Cheers,
Keldo.

Domianator make a converter that should do the trick. They cost around $700. Give them a call to confirm. A trans cooler is highly recomended when you put in a higher stall. The extra slipage in the converter generates more heat. If you dont get rid of the heat it will reduce the life of your trans.
Hope this helps.
Yeah Dominator or TCI make them but you can't go above 2500rpm otherwise the EEC has a fit and puts the car into limp home mode every time you stall it up. You would need a fairly large cam to require anything more than 2500rpm anyway. Yes fit a cooler, every 4 speed auto out there should have a cooler fitted to it to extend it's life and as already said, the higher stall is going to create more heat. BTW you will not get the same performance off the mark compared with the commodore because they have a much better first gear. Instead of doing a stall change, you might want to look into upgrading the diff ratio to a 3.7 or 3.9, that will give acceleration than the stall convertor IMO.
A friend of mine had 4.1 ratio in his E.B with good exhaust.Being auto it didn't seem too low geared..Well considering it was 4.1 to 1..What that gave it away it's SOooo bloody noisy..Good exhaust but "quaility" mufflers!!!
From 1 to 100kph was very quick....

Upgrading the diff is definately on the cards, ive got an LSD centre sitting arround and im planing on sending it off to get the ratio changed to about a 3.9, although ive heard that this will screw up the shift points, as in it will hit the limiter before changing gears... a new diff is definately part of the equation, just wondering about the stall, thanks for your thoughts people
Cheers,
Keldo

the auto will run fine with the 3.9 diff, so long as you leave the speedo alone, if you have the stock 3.08 speedo gear in it will read 130km/h at a true 100.
jaycar sell a speedo corrector box that you could possibly fit just before the instrument cluster, santoitaliano bought one the other day but is having probs making it work...
i reckon get a big trans cooler, a 23-2500rpm stallie and a 3.9 diff...depends on how hard you want to rev at 100.
to get revs at 100, take current revs @100, divide by current diff ratio, multiply by new diff ratio, and hope its not unacceptable.
good luck :)

3.9:1 lokka and 2500 TCI/Dominator lockup will make a very streetable combination, allowing normal driving, howevere when stalled up will give a very good jump over stock

I had a 94 ED Fairmont for couple of years with a 3.70:1 ratio with mini spool.. Was absolute awesum fun, would spin around on a dime. My speedo was out just made the car sluggish for a while(ECU reset fixed this).. Changed the gear to 3.45:1 speedo gear out of an XR6 and with my low profile rubber made it nearly close, never did have problems with gear changing.. Car was still capable of over 200km/h (non speed limited XR6 ECU)
Axles in ED onwards are 28 spline.. B4 ED are 25 spline so if you were to use a mini spool, better to do to one of these as they're stronger.. ( I never broke one and I was pretty harsh on it) Would recommend changing ratio to anyone over anything else

Match your stall to the cam. Otherwise you'll potentially go backwards in accelleration. I have a 2800 rpm stall in mine and it's great. the stall was at 3500 rpm but was way too high even with a mild cam. I'd go diff gears first and stall once the engine was sorted.
Streetability wise it's fine. Doesn't bother me at all. Not as smooth as our BA fairmont but thats not the point

actually EB onwards have 28 spline, and possibly even EAII...
