I have a 1987 Bronco/300 6cyl. Periodically when starting the vehicle the starter motor will continue to run. The only way to get it to disengage is to disconnect the positive terminal on the battery. Once it is re-connected, it will go several days, and then repeat. I have replaced the solenoid and the problem still occurs. The key can be turned off and removed from the igition and the starter will still crank the engine, though it does not start. Cables appear to be in good shape.

Which style soleinoid do you have ? Firewall mount or starter mount ? If it's the firewall mount make sure there is a good ground. It would also be wise to run a seperate ground to the starter.
The most common reason for this it a dry or damaged starter bendix or starter shaft. Inspect it closely. Lube with graphite.
