Re: Steering Boxes... Are They The Same?

I took the powersteering from my old XB RIP (Rusted into Pieces), and it all bolted up to my XD. I guess XC>XE would be the same, good old Ford not up dating things too often!

Re: Steering Boxes... Are They The Same?

I changed the one in my GT not long ago. I went through 3 'so called' reco boxes 'till I got one that worked properly.... Let me just say that there are good places to get reco's and bad...

Anyway... at the time, there were different models of steering boxes. I was told that the GT's had a "less turns lock to lock" box which also had a slightly heavier feel than the normal box. I'm not sure what effect this has on the turning circle, or if there are other ratio boxes availabel - eg. LTD etc.

Regards

GT's (and I think GS's) had a 16:1 steering box and normal falcons had a 20:1 steering box. The power steering box has a variable ratio.

The steering boxes all interchange between XA- XF..
XW + XY manual boxes look the same but have a different mount pattern on the chassis.

Re: Steering Boxes... Are They The Same?

I ripped the P/S out of my XE, cos it was leaking everywhere and I hate the fact that you can't 'feel' the road, so I chucked in a manual steering box from the wreckers. I find the manual boxes more stable at speed.

It's lasted about a year now, so it's time another swap.
Does anybody know where I can get a new steering box?
I'm not sure if I've got a 16:1 or a 20:1, but it's pretty heavy with 225/60/15s up front.

Has anybody gone from a 16:1 to a 20:1, (or visa versa)?
Can you tell the difference?
Which one did you prefer?
Was the steering lighter with the 20:1 ratio box?

Re: Steering Boxes... Are They The Same?

Someone on this forum, suggested that the steering columns had to be changed if the box was being changed from power-manual or manual-power? I hope they were wrong, because mine is near on flogged out and i was hoping to instal power steering from an XF into the XB.

Re: Steering Boxes... Are They The Same?

The steering boxes are differnet lengths (man vs pwr). With the collapsable, telescopic steering columns, I believe they are universal and lengthen/shorten as required.

So the boxes are different lengths from where they bolt to the car to the top of the rubber coupling right?
Are you referring to XA-XF steering columns? And that they can be adjusted? I don't quite understand what your saying.
