Just got the 80,000 km's service done and a few things were highlighted as bad.
The steering rack was one of them..is it normal for this to wear out after this amount of time? The mechanic quoted me $475 to replace it, is this price okay?
This is our first new car and to be honest I haven't been impressed with the things that have gone wrong with it over the time since new. Did we just get abit of a lemon or is this normal wear and tear.
80,000k's is extremly low for it to fail. My EF XR6 has 150,000k's with no rack problems, had an old EA with 250,000 odd k's and no rack problems and over the last 12 or so years, my company has had about 10 or 12 E series Falcons reach 100,000k's and none have ever had a rack problem.
The P/S pumps can get noisy and/or leak though, but even so not until well in the 100,000+ k range.
The left side only of the rack is leaking oil pretty badly.
The mechanic gave me a look and when it was turned it leaked a few drops directly into his hand.
There was a plastic thing around the boot that had actually come away from it, which I am told is because it filled up with oil and blew out from the pressure.
I didn't think this sort of thing would go wrong after only 80 000 kms, but I was told it was fairly normal wear and tear.
I know that when my car went in for a service I had a steering rack leak at 20,000kms.
I got the job fixed under warranty. They when I got my car back it went back in, casue they tighten the rack up too much so that it wouldn't spin back to centre. You had to move it....

I am not sure to be honest, I did have a look under the car and if you move the rubber boot it has got oil/fluid leaking from it.
Had another mechanic look at it and said it needed to be replaced as well so I guess that's what I have to do.
Luck of the draw and I guess and unfortunately out of warranty.
