stupid question

There is no way i can ask this question without looking like an idiot, so i'm just going to admit that while im usually not this irresponsible, i was being a moron when the reason for this question arose... My question here is how badly did i hurt my drivetrain.

I was out at the airport (abandoned and we have permission) with some friends the other day, basically being an idiot. We were racing, not against each other, but for times, and several of us were drinking. I know, and you don't need to tell me...im stupid.

I'm happy to still be here, feeling like a moron, but now my problem is this...

As inebriated as i was, i pushed my little ford focus to the redline and beyond on several occasions without shifting, once or twice so much that it skipped a little (transmission slip?). I know some stuff about cars, and i have replaced an engine, but i have no idea how much damage i might have done to mine in this case, or to the transmission. I can't stop worrying, wondering how much i have shortened the life of my car, so i thought I'd throw it out here. It's a 5 speed with the 2.0 L engine, a 2003, and has about 60k on it.

the car isn't making any unusual noises, but i know i could have easily damaged some valves and vital tranny parts. I'm still paying for it so hopefully the news isn't too bad, but anyone who wants to tell me what i might have damaged would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: stupid question

Laars,

Took a while to figure out whether to answer this one, but I (and I reckon most of us) have done some pretty bloody stupid stuff at times, so I am the last one to get up on the soapbox. Those of us reading the forum are the lucky ones - we are still reading this and able to enjoy a great forum. Just learn from the experience mate.

Now re the car! Bit of a piece of string question. How far did you push it? Manufacturers normally (not always!) are fairly conservative with the redline, so if you didn't take it too far past it, the car may well be ok. As for the skipping, it is quite possible you hit the rev limiter, assuming the car has one, which should prevent damage.

Re: stupid question

It would have a rev limiter..Maybe high like 5 to 800+ over redline...
Like the efi w V8's are set at 6250 rpm while redline [std] is 5500 "I think" ?
If you drove it home you'll be o/k...
I'll only say, good drivers don't drink...
But your honest enough to admit it...

Re: stupid question

my redline is 5000rpm, stock cutout is 5400 or so, and with my new computer it now spins to 5850 before cutout.

it has 193,000km on it, is regularly well past redline for extended periods of time (burnouts, racing at various racetracks, drifting etc) and has been thrashed like a bastard since 110,000km.

it still hammers.

so the short answer is: NO, you did not hurt your motor. give it more sh!t every chance you get :)
