Alright, first.. the two bars connected in the middle at the end of the differential and also to the bottom of the car on both sides (both maybe 50-60 cm).. are these the Tailshaft?

Also, looking at the differential, it says Slip resistant diff. Is this the same as LSD?

Theres a few numbers printed around the diff, such as 311, 80-0099001w or something.. does the 311 mean 3.11:1 diff ratio?

Finally, where do I look to find the.. bolt? plug? to take out to test the fluid level in the diff, and top up if necessary?

The bars that go from the centre of the diff to the chasis is the watts link. It stops the diff from moving from side to side. The ratio should be printed on the metal tag, it is sometimes hard to read, but it should be 2.77/3.08/3.23/3.27.3.45 (most common). The bolt to drain the oil is the bottom bolt that holds the diff cover on. I believe it looks different to the otherws, but not sure.

To test the fluid level , there is a 30mm bolt half way up the diff housing, the fluid should be up to that level.

LSD stands for Limited Sliff Differential, which should be indicated by a metal tag on the inspection plug.

The tailshaft is what drives the diff. The drain plug as mentioned is the bottom bolt on the diff housing (1/2").

the LSDs have a rubber bung not a bolt - its in the same place though, about halfway up the back of the diff.

make sure you check the level on level ground.

the tailshaft is the round thing that goes up the centre of the car, from the diff to gearbox.

My Ghia has a 3.23 LSD and it has a bolt, not a bung.
