Technical Query - Oil Gauge on idle time.

Anyone answer this for me? My friend asked me and I was baffled to answer...

If a car is sitting idle and the oil gauge drops 'low', but when you rev it goes back to normal, what is this a sign of?

I was under the assumption its just the oil pump, but hell, we have some guru's in here, so why not ask them?

Any help would be appreciated!

Yep this happend on my XF and now also happens on my AU XR6. After I come off the freeway and then sit in traffic sometimes it happens - it's more prevelant when the air conditioning is switched on, on hot days.

I don't know why this happens - would be interested though!

Wheels: 17" Series 1 XR
Exhaust: VCT with no resonators & 3" mandrel from mufflers back, dump pipe
Pacemaker headers (Waste of money).
Air Intake: T-Series, K&N Filter.
Brakes: Calipers painted red, DBA slotted rotors & Lucas pads.
Windows: Tinted.
Gearstick: Shortened.
Fuel: Dual Fuel.
Dyno: 143 rwKw (Dynodynamics - shootout mode).
Heathcote: 15.87 @ 89.1 Mph.

The lower the idle speed the lower the pressure though the system as the pump spins slower.
If it dips in to the red on the guage (like deep in to the red not just on the very edge) then it's most likly low oil. If it stays low all the time then the oil pump is buggered or the sensor is sticking.
It's quite normal for the guage to dip a little after sitting at high revs for a while so don't worry about till it stays in the red.
