How do you tell EFs and ELs apart.

I can tell the Falcons apart easily but what about Fairmonts?

I thought the EFs had the clear indicator on the rear and on the ELs you can see the indicator, but I've seen Fairmonts where this isn't the case .

How can I tell if a Fairmont is an EF or an EL? What are the main differences between EF & EL models?

Reason why you've seen EL Fairmonts with the clear lights from the EF is because these clear lights were standard on the higher spec cars (Fairmont and Fairmont Ghia). Lower series models such as the gli, futura and xr series used the lights with the amber (orange) indicators. There are many ways you can tell the difference between EF Fairmonts and EL Fairmonts. In point form these are:

1) The EF Fairmont had locks on both driver and passenger front doors, wheres the EL had a lock only on the drivers side. Passenger door handle is different to EF to compensate for this.

2) The 'B' pillar on EF models was body coloured whereas on the EL this was black.

3) The front grille on the EF Fairmont was smaller and the surround was body coloured. On the EL the surround was chrome and had a horizontal bar running across it with the Ford badge in the middle.

4) The side indicators on the EF were triangular whereas the EL had different mouldings and a rounder amber coloured indicator.

5) last one promise....
The EL Fairmont had thin chrome strips on the door mouldings whereas the EF mouldings were all body coloured.

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing the interior different is the EL is more roundish and the trim is lighter?

The EL isn't more roundish cause the interior componenets are the same as in the EF. EL's had a grey backing in the instrument cluster but on the EF's it was black. The trim on the EL seats was abit weird cause it had a piece that looked like a ripply arse cheek running across it.
