My first car was a 1984 TX5-- I got it for $300 and it is still going, although my dad drives it now.
I lost my radiator cap on the highway, and simultaneously developed a water leak in the water pump driven by the crankshaft--this led to loss of water, and in turn overheating and a warped head. Reconiditioning and shaving of head--$300, I removed and installed it myself.
Changing CV joints is simple--you will notice a clunking noise when they are on the way out.
Rust can be a problem particular on the rear flares above the wheels, and along the rear of the underbody sideskirts.
Mine was a 5spd manual, my dad changed the clutch and gearbox and it was quite simple. Runs like a dream, really starts to scream at about 5500 rpm.
Stats of 1984: 68kw (84 hp), 110 nm,
max speed (through one independent test...) 167 km/hr
