Telstar TX5

My sis just bought a 1985 telstar

Anyone who has one of these can you tell me:

a) things to look out for ie mechanically etc

b) basic stats of this car, ie power, torque (rofl)

I've got a 84 telstar I'm tryin to sell in Adelaide.

Things to look out for would be:

CV jounts (make sure they dont clik around corners)
Auto ( if it has one, be sure to see if it engaes into gear immediatly)
Ball joints
Rear crank seal for oil leaks. (If it leaks oil from there you may be lookin at a $400? repair)

Some stuff to look out for from personal experience.

My friend has an 85 Telstar TX5 Ghia manual.

Radiator hoses are to be looked of his screwed itself on a trip...ended up costing him a new head.

Thats all i can think of right now

His tx5 ghia has about 74kw standard....but it goes like all sh1t!

The telstar turbo had i think 80 something kw.

It may only have 74kw but in the manual form it can keep up with (untill 80k's) a 92 Verada auto 3.0L which had 120kw

My first car was a 1984 TX5-- I got it for $300 and it is still going, although my dad drives it now.

I lost my radiator cap on the highway, and simultaneously developed a water leak in the water pump driven by the crankshaft--this led to loss of water, and in turn overheating and a warped head. Reconiditioning and shaving of head--$300, I removed and installed it myself.

Changing CV joints is simple--you will notice a clunking noise when they are on the way out.

Rust can be a problem particular on the rear flares above the wheels, and along the rear of the underbody sideskirts.

Mine was a 5spd manual, my dad changed the clutch and gearbox and it was quite simple. Runs like a dream, really starts to scream at about 5500 rpm.

Stats of 1984: 68kw (84 hp), 110 nm,
max speed (through one independent test...) 167 km/hr
