Timing chain cover F*%#&D

I ahve about a 2 inch by 3/4 inch hole in my timing chain cover so i discovered. How in hell would this happen? Its on the side of it near the bottom.

no idea mate. on my old ED I6 the timing chain broke a tooth which i didnt know about and the timing was automaically adjusted to compensate, BUT , the timing chain was bashing around inside and wore away most of its guides ect, which resulted in a top end rebuild pretty much, but i dont think a loose timing chain could make a hole !

I also have noticed a hole punched in timing cover of my ea f/mont ghia- Pulled the old timing cover off to find one of the plastic chain guides had completely disintegrated allowing chain to rub against casing and break the cover.Broken on right sideas you look at front of engine, just above above where cover joins sump.
