Subject/Concern: Clicking Noise in Steering COlumn

Models:: BA Falcon built in January and February 2004

Cause: The lower bearing in the stee4ring column assembly may not be within manufacturers tolerances.

Action: Inspect column and replace if necessary. (Ref BA workshop manual sect 211-04).
Reimbursable within the Provisions of the Warranty and Policy Manual.

Concern Description:
On Columns built during this period the lower bearing in the steering column assembly may not be within the manufacturers tolerance and therefore produces a clicking noise when the steering wheel is rotated from lock to lock.
Note: There are usually several clicks per revolution of the steering wheel. Do not mistake the indicator canceling mechanism for this issue.

Service Action:
The suspect Steering Column assemblies can be identified, by the Column build date that can be located on a green sticker positioned on the under side of the column. This sticker is clearly visible through the lower shroud (In cabin at the steering column adjustment lever cut out). The Column build dates with the possible concern are from the 19 Jan 04 to the 6 Feb 04. The date codes on the green sticker are described as follows, 19A4 =19 Jan 04 and 06134 = 6th Feb 04, so that the Letter "A" indicates Jan, the Letter "B" indicates Feb.

1. Safely lift both front wheels off the ground, and start engine.
Note 1: When jacking front wheels ensure that the transmission if Auto is in Park, or in Manual, neutral should be selected with hand-brake engaged.
Note 2: Engine must be started for this procedure to avoid aeration in the power s system, which may cause power steering shudder.
OR
While driving slowly (less than 15 km/hr)

2. Rotate steering wheel a minimum of 180 degrees (half a turn) clockwise and anticlockwise from ahead position.

3. Also for rake and reach adjustable columns check at various positions from full in to full out rotating as described above.

4. Listen for a clicking noise. This will appear to be emanating from the steering wheel and will usually be several clicks.
Note 1:- Do not mistake the indicator canceling cam for this noise.
Note 2:- Do not mistake a creak noise in the Rack to 2B cross-member joint seen in some cars for the clicking noise.

5. If a clicking noise can be heard replace the steering column. (Ref BA workshop manual sect 211-04) Refer to BA workshop manual sect 211-04
Note:- Please review all Airbag safety instructions specified in BA workshop manual sect 211-04.

6. Repeat test to ensure noise has been eliminated
