I have a 98 EL GLI, auto, 4L

Just recently when I accelerate over about 2.5K the engine feels like it can't make up its mind what it wants to do. It vibrates and farts arount so I pull throttle back. It feels like it doesn't know what gear to ask for an has a few stabs at it. I can't push it because it feels wrong with the peddle about on the floor and the revvs bouncing around 2.5k

??could this be transmission related or enging????

under very gradual acceleration it is ok it will revv right through just like it used to.

The car is still perfect for normal trafic driving my mum drives my car sometimes and she didn't say anything because she stays under 2.5K.

anyway I can't wait to here what you guys suggest

could be MAF

How long ago did the car have a Tuneup, going along those lines - how old are your plugs, leads, air filter etc

Fuel injectors could be blocked - get it to someone who can hook up a diagnostic tester to it

No MAF sensor in the EL 6cyl, they used MAP.

How many K's has the car done??? Check you fuel pressure and you fuel filter. Check your cat. Get the codes out of the computer. Check your timing.

All good places to start...

Check your ignition (coil & dizzy, wiring), there might be fluids leaking on them.

To narrow it down to engine or gearox put it in neutral and try it it to see if it does the same thing as when your driving...one of my mates had a cracked something (cant remember what it was) in his gearbox and it shook the car like crazy above about 2k...

Friend of mine had a Senator that used to buck around over 3k. Problem was bunged up spark plugs and bad leads. Might help.
