can anyone shed some light on this please i need to know if you can legally put a 351 clevo in a xf in nsw.first will it fit as i heard there is diferences in engine bay to a xd xe?ive heard you have to run lpg is this the only way???(cheers matt)

You need LPG to make it legal.
Which engine does your car have? The 4.0 OHC or 4.1?
I put a 351 clevo into my 85 XF sedan and it went straight in with XE engine mounts. The only clearance issue is the heater pipes. Im not sure if the utes are the same but my heater pipes clashed with the heads so I removed the heater. Some reroute them through the air con holes further to the right.

the car has the 4.1 last of the xf"s i think its a 5/91 model .it is a ute im thinking of buying it as the car is already done up but thought i could put a 8 into it.

will need to be engineered as well. theres numerous threads on this and it should just go in...minus the heater of course! dont forget to change all the front suspension and radiator as well.

There are a few ways around the problem, I probably chose the harder way when I attempted it.

Solutions ive heard to correcting the problem are:

* cut the firewall out and replace with an XD/XE firewall and use an XD/XE heater box, perfect if you wish retain the air cond. (this is how I got around the problem).

* relocate the heater pipes to the air cond holes, obvouisly you will have to lose your air cond.

* reshape existing firewall and plastic weld the heater box, also can have retain air cond.

Engineering ?? is there some modifications to the chassis i need to know aboout before dropping a clevo into my xf 90 ute ??

no you just need to get the ok from an engineer after its finished....to make sure its all safe and done properly. this is for vicroads so they can let you register it or for when you tell them that youve put a V8 in there. just a money maker really.

did you put an 8 in your van? if so did you manage to keep the a/c if you had one ? I'm concerned about the pipe running down the drivers side to the compressor.
any pics of the engine would be great.

nah never done it sorry so i cant really help with the technicals. although if i keep the van long enough i plan to drop one in, put an LTD front on and interior in as well. well thats the plan but will probably never happen though.

I tried in SA. The road transport department spec sheet said (for 86 on) a fuel injected 5.0 l was the only option and you must have a disk brake rear end. I was going to slot in a 351C it still sitting in the ZD. If you do the conversion, don't move to SA they would register your 91 with a 351. Good luck
