Valvemaster

Hi all,

What is the common thought about Valvemaster (lead replacement stuff) as an additive to PULP?

Anyone use it or recommend it (or not recommend it). Is it good to use or should it be avoided? I have no catalytic converter in my stock '77 302 and am wonderng if Valvemaster is ok to use (combined with Optimax)

That stuff is used as a lead substitute to prevent valve seat recession. It is highly regarded, but I would be wary of using it if you have a catalytic converter.

I have a high compression 351 and run premium unleaded to avoid pinging as the thing just won't run on super. Consequently, I run Valvemaster as a lead additive.

The only trouble I have experienced so far is that the plugs just packed it in one day all at the same time. It was running fine then just wouldn't start. NRMA mechanic could not fix it. Screwed a new set of plugs in and it started straight away. I can only attribute this to the additive.

BTW, I can still get my car to ping on Optimax if I load it up, but have tried BP Ultimate and it doesn't ping at all. This tells me the BP either has different additives or a higher octane rating.

In contrast, my XR8 seems to perform best on Mobil Synergy 8000.

My advice would be to experiment with different brands of fuel.
One bloke I spoke to reckons his 6 ran best on Caltex Vortex Gold even though he acknowledged this stuff is only 95 RON as opposed to 98 Ron like the other premiums.

The other alternative to the Valvemaster is to get your valve seats hardened which is about $32 per seat if you give them the heads bare.

about $25 per seat for me, not including new valves.
$25 x 16 = ouch!

The main active ingredient in valvemaster is kerosene(about 70%)
I used to use it in my telstar but once I realised what it was, I wasnt about to pay $2.40 for two of them everytime I filled up.I just buy a bottle of kero for $2 and add a little before I fill. I do 220km a day and I dont seem to have any problems.
