frown Wayward EA

Hi all, I'm new here. On a mission to find some info about my wayward ford. For some time it has been spraying oil over the left side of the engine bay. It can now be seen externally on the bonnet above the headlight. This hasn't been a prob, I just keep putting oil in it. The reason I ask now is because it running like crap. Sometimes it is very hard to start, won't hold revs, but she gets going all is well. I am wondering which gasket it could be. I have a slight suspicion it could be the head as it has needed some water lately. Also has anyone else experience a ghostly temp needly? I was travelling on the freeway the otherday and the needle went from just above cold to the 'M' in normal and came back down. It did this the entire journey. Oh, I am female with only dad taught knowledge, but willing to get dirty. Hope someone can help. I have read donuts2001 DIY gasket change.

Re: Wayward EA

Bouncing temp gauges do happen, change the thermostat, just make sure to put a 3mm hole in the outer ring part of the thermostat before installing (if it doesnt have one) should solve that issue.

2nd problem does sound like a head gasket thats getting worse, the gasket is probably quite soaked with oil now, and compression is probably going down making it hard to start, or oil has leaked onto at least one plug, pull spark plugs how do they look, do a compression test to see if the head gasket is doing its job (remove all plugs when doing the test) by that I mean is compression leaking out or holding corect in every cylinder, well start with that and see what it shows.

OH and welcome to the Forums.

I did put something here, but it vanshied, I think

Re: Wayward EA

Welcome to the forums chrislr,

One of the easiest ways I have found to see where the oil is comming from is to give the engine bay a really good clean, then take her for a spin & see where the oil is comming from. This should make it easier to see rather than trying to find a needle in the hay stack so to speak with all of the oil everywhere.

Good to see another gal who likes getting her hands dirty too
