My newly purchased (!!!!!!!!!) xf carby makes a noise after the engine has started that gets quieter until stops in about 2/3 seconds. Sounds like a mini plane turning its engine off noise (reducing speed).

Is it the starter motor or something normal with carby cars (this is my first carb).

The previous owner said that the pacermaker extrcators were running so hot they were stuffing the solenoid in the starter motor and has since wrapped the end few in heat wrap and siad it fixed the problem.

Cheers guys,
Pete
ps It goes hard!

It is the starter motor as yesterday i went to start it and it stalled. I tryed to start it while making the whine down noise and it crunched like it does when the ignition is on and you try to start ya mums festiva becuase its so quite.

DOes this mean its on the way out?

bascially yes, it is not disengaging cleanly, if you dont do something soon you will wear it out, and no more starting period, pull it out, and check the gear at the end for wear, while you at it, check the teeth on the plate that it engages onto to start the car for wear as well.

Oh and disconnect the negative before playing with the starter motor, the main wire on the back it is a positive straight from the battery so it carries a lot of charge, you can almost arc weld a spanner to the car if you touch the body while undoing the nut at the back if you not careful :0)
