Although this may be true. You can get extremely close to the sound of an eight with a straight six.
One example I can think of was a 250 precrossflow cortina, with pacemakers, holley 500, lumpy cam, 2 and 1/2 inch exhaust into a 3 inch dump pipe.
If I had not known what the engine was I would have thought it was an eight for sure.
