biggrin Whats faster?

Hey All,

I thought I'd start a debate. Whats faster - EL XR6 vs VU S Ute.

Ok, heres the stats on both:

1997 EL XR6
----------------
Power 164 KW
Torque 366 Nm
Weight to Power Ratio 9.34 : 1 kg/kW
Kerb Weight 1531 kg

2003 VU S Ute
------------------
Power 152 KW
Torque 305 Nm
Weight to Power Ratio 10.13 : 1 kg/kW
Kerb Weight 1540 kg

The commondore weighs in at a 1540kgs (!alot?) and the XR comes in at 1531kgs. Now my question is, even though the XR has more torque and power, is there ever a time where the weight to power ratio doesn't mean a car is faster than another?

Or are wieght to power ratios the ultimate in determining whats faster out of two cars. I mean, the BAGT is something like 5.8 to 1 and needless to say is alot quicker than these two cars!

So making a car faster is simply a matter of improving the weight to power ratio, so adding 15kws with extractors and exhaust would make an ELXR6 roughly 8.54: 1 kg/kW... which would rival the power to weight ratio of a old VR/VS SS commondore, but would it necessarily outgun it?

What are your thoughts? Am I way off?

Traction and gear ratios also would play a big part.

For interests sake, mate of mine has manual VU 6, has run 14.8 with LSD and exhaust mods.

Yep, you may find that the commondore is running 3.7 diff ratio and the falcon has 3.11? This in itself would make the commondore accelerate faster, but it also depends on the ratios in the gearbox. Power and weight are only part of the equation (but a pretty important part).

It can also depend on your definition of faster - Acceleration times (1/4 mile) or top speed...

Quarter mile speed is what I mean, not top speed :)

Here is the gear ratio's for the two: (5 spd Manual)

EL XR6
Gear Ratios:
1st 3.25
2nd 1.99
3rd 1.29
4th 1.00
5th 0.72

Diff Ratio: 3.45

VU S Ute
1st 3.83
2nd 2.19
3rd 1.40
4th 1.00
5th 0.81

Diff Ratio: 3.46

What does this mean? in reference to the above info I posted?

Your drag co-efficient also plays a part.

If the VU Ute was areo dynamic, and weighed 1.5 tons, and the XR6 was a cube on wheels, but was only 1 ton, the ute would still thrash it!

So the general idea is, theres no real definate answer to my question? Too many factors.

Does help the question if they are both stock as a rock, nothing modded?

Aerodynamics doesnt really come into it until after around 160kmh. Which is why the Ford Lightning with a cd factor of 43 or something, can run mid-high 13s stock.
