window tint - what legal and illegal?

I went to tint-a-car on sat and asked if i could get my rear 3 windows in my wagon heavily tinted but he said it was illegal and insurance companies dont like it! Put me off straight away till i find out more. Anyone help?

I have no idea about the regs in Victoria, but in NSW the tinting limit is 35%. Anything less (blacker) than this and your car is illegally modified, and thus any insurance is void.

I was of the impression you can have the rear windows in a wagon as black as you want.

In NSW only vans and utes can have dark tint on rear windows as these are designed as commercial vehicles and as such could have the view through these windows obscured by the load.
