OK - I'm going to get an Xbox for my young bloke and need to find out exactly what the score is with this chipping business - ie. with chipping:
Can PS2 games be played on it?
Can PC games be played on it?
Don't get me wrong - I don't intend to actually pursue chipping seriously any time soon but from what he's been saying, my son has the impression that "for a couple - a - hundred bucks" the Xbox can be made to play PC and PS2 games - so I'd like to be able to control the inevitable pestering that's going to occur by having accurate and up to date info.
Re: Xbox "chipping" - what's the no crap bottom line?
U'd need some form of emulator; easier to do on PCs than on the said xbox, actually I wouldn't believe it until I saw it.
That being said, Sony managed to make it illegal via copyright, piracy and patent law to chip PS2s with some huge fine now attached, I wouldnt be suprised if Microshaft has taken up the same idea.
Re: Xbox "chipping" - what's the no crap bottom line?
things that can be done with a chipped xbox
hdd replaced with a bigger hdd so you can store games on it
you can play your backup copys cough
you can play import games.

you can get a decent Seagate 160 GB drive with 8MB cache for $270. That's alot better than the standard 8GB(?) drive in the XBox. $205 for the 120GB version

xBox bios won't support anything over the 120Gig, and its no use getting the 8meg cache because you won't see any performance increase as its only ATA33 I believe.
I'm not sure about playing PC / PS2 games on a modded xBox, but you can copy games to Harddrive etc. Of course modding will void warrenty.

Yes and no. You need a BIOS that can handle >137 GB drives and it'll work fine. I installed an OzXChip in mine just the other week and i installed the Xecuter2 BIOS (v 4977 *FC*) and I can see my entire 200GB drive. :D
One thing that wasn't mentioned is the ability to play movies. The Xbox Media Player has several features that allow you to play movies at the best quality. Sometimes when I play a movie on my laptop the sound can be out by up to several seconds. In XBMP you can shift the sound, stretch the screen vertically and horizontally, enable widescreen and do other cool stuff. If you have lots of movies and DivX or Xvid format then the mod chip is worth it just for that.
You also get a region free DVD player and if you're so inclined you can even install Linux onto it!
Fun times if you have a mod chip...

Our mate has a chipped xBox, he did the usual, Bigger hard drive etc, he has software on it so that he can map drive accross a regualer tcp/ip network and uses this to play media from his PC.
Re: Xbox "chipping" - what's the no crap bottom line?
Yes it can be done, from what I have heard there is or will be a chip allowing you to play any game on a cd except for PC games, as they require a bit more to play them. And Game cube games because of the 8cm size.
You will be able to play;
X-Box
PS2
PSone
Sega dreamcast
Sega Saturn
Re: Xbox "chipping" - what's the no crap bottom line?
my mate has a chipped Xbox with an 80gig hd and he can play all the old skool games like mario bros, galactica, golden axe and other pc games as well as the new PS2, Xbox and other cd related games.
