G'day all...
My Brother has a XE with a EFI 6 in it and has been having problums with it lately..
Every time he go's to take off and drive it it back fires and runbs like s#@*.
He put new plugs in,still the same
Another dizzy,still the same....
Funny thing is every time he unplugs the big black plug that go's into the air box (O2 senser?) it runs better, not 100% but better..
Anyone know what the prolum could be,he took it to a machinic with not luck, auto electrtion but still no luck.
Timing has been check a few times,im pretty sure the machanic would have checked the coil and we tryed the pulling of eacj lead to see if the car starts to run any better or worse (like checking for a cylender not fireing) but no go there ether.
I forgot to add he said it happened while driving,he went to go around a corner and as he got on the loud paddle (HARD) it backfired then it has been playing up from there.
So you could be right with the burnt valve(s)
Thank you for your response :)
Cheers
Chris

if it continues running when you disconnect the airflow meter/temperature sensor, it may be your ECU, located behind the passenger kickpanel. My xe efi would stall if i disconnected the meter as the computer gets confused and floods the engine, maybe another sensor located in the engine somewhere. I say get it on gas, forget petrol, rip out the factory piping back to the throttle body and get tubing in stainless bent up so you get a pod airfilter behind the passenger headlight. Did it with my car teamed up with genie headers and a 2 1/4" exhaust and the car flew, beat a 13B RX7, with no other work to my car! I can send a diagram that will still allow the use of petrol if you want.
I think I will shut up now.
Good bye.

I have a book on all the specs. for XE, XF, EA Falcons and equiv. Fairlaines. So if you can give me some more precise info, I may be able to help you track the prob. down.
I just read that you said it backfired... It is your throttle body!
The back fire bends the pin that holds the vane inside, not allowing it to move properly, this gives the computer a false reading causing the backfiring. This happened on my car when it was on gas, they are notorious for it. Check that everything is tight and get a tune up. The Airflow meter will have to be replaced with a changeover unit. Not shure how much, but I was lucky to fing mine at a Wrecker for $60.

XESpakman-Thanks mate I'll have a chat to my brother tomorrow about what you just said,I get the feeling you have just helped big time :)
He wants abit more power out of it to so I'll tell him about running a pod filter ect see what he says.
Thanks again mate :):)

i had simular probs in my XEFI ghia, went to get on LOUD pedal oneday and it stalled from then on it would stall whenever u tried to accelerate then it became worse till it wouldnt run.
Went to mechanic he said fuel pump so got new one of them, then a riens of family who used to be a FORD mechanic in the 80's and he went through-leads,plugs,air filter+sensor, distributor etc etc.
there were things he did that i cant remember anyway he said try ECU so went to wreckers got ECU out of 83 Fairlane put in car then no problems again.
yeah so after all that bullshit i would just go 2 wrecker(i think it cost $20 from local wrecker.
Sorry I should have addad...this is what we have tryed so far.....
Replacing leads,plugs,dizzy(2nd hand from wreckers),ECU (2nd hand from wreckers, sorry I forget about that) and air box with O2 senser (2nd hand from wreckers).
We are going to have a go with the throttle body thing on the weekend so I'll let you know how we go.
EXSpakman-thanks for all your help and the diagram:)
