Converting 4 cyl. to 6

Hi fellas
I have a body of a 2l. TE and have decided to put a 6 cyl. engine in it.
I'm sure some of you have done this too. Can you enlighten me on the problems I am about to encounter.
Thanks

Re: Converting 4 cyl. to 6

ok, asuming you are using a x-flow 250 (not having done it my self) you will need, 6cyl springs, shocks, steering rack, diff, possibly gear box (i've been told it's the same box just different ratios) the engine should bolt staright in with no hassels. with all the work you would be doing i would consider it more time/cost effective if you sold it and just bought a 6 banger corty straight up. there is a lot of possibilty for this engine i seem to get the idea that 290hp is wuite comfortable.

Re: Converting 4 cyl. to 6

OK I was thinking 250 x-flow but Now I'm not so sure. What about an EA or EF engine. I see a few of them around for sale. To get good power out of a x-flow I'd probably have to spend heaps of $$. while EA engine has a bit more guts with no mods. Does anyone know of any problems with such a conversion?

Re: Converting 4 cyl. to 6

Basically all you need is a 250 x-f with dual hump sump, a bw35 or single rail with shorter extension housing, shorter tailshaft and the diff pinion yoke.
You also need to bend the radiator flap down to bolt the 6 cyl radiator in.

You need all the engine and gearbox mounts and all other small bits.

I am wrecking a TE Cortina Ghia with a 250 X-Flow and BW35.

Re: Converting 4 cyl. to 6

steering rack is the same, gearbox is totally different, still need the 6cyl springs in the front but. you'll need to check the bonnet clearance for the OHC engine as they're quite a bit taller.

Re: Converting 4 cyl. to 6

Look up Lovells and you'll find the standard TE Cortina 4 cyl front springs are the same as lowered TE Cortina 6 cyl springs.
The standard TE Cortina 6 cyl springs are lowered XD Falcon V8 springs.

Also the bonnets are the same for TE 4 and TE 6 and the genuine chasis and engine mounts for the 6 will lower it.

Re: Converting 4 cyl. to 6

I see
What about the tunnel for the gear box?
Is it bigger on the 6 cyl or are they all the same?

Tunnel is the same but the gearbox mount is different.
The six has a long flat bar then curves up and the end.
The four is flat (I think)

Always best to find a cheap rusty six and use all the parts off it.
