i think the biggest thing u need to be sure of is that your shell has the 6 cylinder firewall which curves away from the engine in the centre.
have a look at the webpage in my sig and it shows my corty with a 4.0l if u went that way about it

Beats a 250 x-flow doesn't it.
However the TEs have way less room on either side of the engine but more room in front of it, I think.
That firewall curving away from the engine - does that apply to TEs too? Couse I cant see any difference in the firewalls of 4 cyl and 6 cyl TEs. What exactly should I be looking at?
not 100% sure on the firewall thing on TE's but stranger things have happened. if the firewall is in straight line from the booster to the heater box, a 6 wont fit.
i dont know about the clearance issue's on a TE. i'd doubt though that the engine bay would be much longer. u'd need it to be a good 150-200mm longer if u didnt want to modify the 4.0L to fit. if u wanted to use the ef/l injection, the plenum chamber will foul the heater box. so u'll either have to modify the heater box or remove it all together.

grumish, the engine bays are different. i tried and failed to upload pics to the forum so i uploaded the link below. you can see the white engine bay(2.0L) bulkhead runs straight across at the back of the cylinder head. the other pic of the empty engine bay is from a shell in my backyard and it makes it easy to see the "cut-out". hope that helps :)

Gotta admit I've never seen a TE with a straight firewall like that. I've looked at heaps of 4 and 6 cyl Cortinas at different wreckers but they all had the curved firewall even the 4 cyl. Mine is no exception. It had a 4 cyl. engine in it and has a curved firewall. May be they changed it on the TF's? Is this white car a TF?
nup sorry i missed that detail in the very first post. my apologies. they are both tc/d. forget everything i said.

Having just done a 4 to 6 conversion myself all you need to do is change engine mounts and gearbox mounts and tail shaft. To change gearbox cut the 4 cyl one off the floor, put the motor and box in hold box up with jack, bolt up 6 cyl mounts to gearbox crossmember spotweld in place, undo crossmember from mounts, lower jack, fully weld mounts in and bolt the whole thing back up. Diff ratios are different but dosent effect drive of car, but does make it smoke up better. Brakes, steering all same, need to change radiator too.
OK thanks kensback
Here's what I've done so far:
Got rid of some metal to allow room for the 6 cyl radiator.
I had my eye on a 3.9 multi point and decided to go for that.
Managed to fit it somehow and it looks pretty good now.
I had some problems with the oil sump. Had to get an oil sump off a 6 cyl. corty, then I had to redrill some of the mounting holes to fit to the 3.9 block. The oil pump turned out to be bigger too, so I had to cut out a section and get my brother to weld it back on but make it deeper at the oil pump end. Finaly managed to fit the engine with a lot of use of angle grinder and a hammer to make room for the plenum chamber. Some welding still needs to be done but the engine sits in nicely now. No clearance problems above or in front of the engine. I am now looking for a T5 off an EA-EB to get that in somehow. I am a bit worried about the lack of room right behind the engine, hope the bellhousing of the manuals is smaller than that of the automatics, but if it doesnt fit the angle grinder is still warm.
