i have just aquired a lovely ex grandma cortina ghia with 159k on the clock i want to know about some nice wheels for and if its worth putting a manual gearbox in it ( its got the 250 crossflow ) and also i would like some ideas on how to cheaply lower it
I have done up a TE for show many moons ago and it is now up for sale. So I have some info you might want to consider.
Back when there were not many wheels avail for Cortinas (10 yrs back) besides average 13",14",15" you had no better choice than custom Simonds - B45s the best of the bunch and I got mine polished with 245mm rubber.
But you have a huge variety to pick from now at a great price for 17"!!!!
If you want a good strong box, go the Toyota Supra 5 speed. Rod Hadfield in Castlemaine has the complete kit. But it depends what the car will be used for. Is it worth all the trouble removing pedals fitting a clutch, pedal etc? How clean is the car? May be worth your while purchasing a manual TE.
Hey, I know a guy selling a mint showroom condition, detailed top to bottom, back to front, in and out TE Cortina ................................

gday cortina fella it's always exciting to do up cars but really only if u have the money - we have cortinas and to tell ya the truth i would really suggest putting the money into something more worth while - but yeah still it isn't up to me obviously hehe!!
lowered and nice wheels is always the best way to start

It has been 12 years after I started my project and today I will tell you I would not do it again. It has been completed for nearly 8 years, had it driven to my wedding and has now spent 7 years in the garage under covers. Gave me great satisfaction, starting her up and revving it a little, taking it for a spin around the block then back inside, admirring all the hard work you put into it etc etc.
But when you compare those cars to current technology...they are dinasours that get the heart pumping when you hear the roar from the exhaust pipe. But today, get yourself a Turbo (XR6T) and you will have just as much fun.
Unfortunately when you are young you listen to no-one. So we all learn the hard way.

thanx for all the info guys ....
the thing is im only 16 and have about a grand to spend
i have been looking around for wheels " on the cheap "
i dont know how 12 slotters would look ... ? how big are they
yeah i think i ill just get a shift kit for the 3spd auto in it
i am keen for any info on them ..
thanx again
They used to make Aunger Turbos for cortinas, They used to increase the offset a bit but the looked OK. (and made the car corner MUCH better) The only problem would be finding some, Try the wreckers, Trading post etc.
Regds,
Tote
gday im 16 too but don't have a grand to spend! here's a quote from a friend of mine
'i wouldn't put 12 slotter's on my boat trailer'!! lol!
i think 12 slotters are usually 14"s but on a rare occasion u can get them in 15"s on mine i just pulled some ghia wheels off another one (TE) and they look okish but im still convinced in putting money and time into a better car

hey cortinadude, dont give up mate, ive got a 1600 xflow in my mark 2, kills a hsv comodore (only auto though) true u could buy a new car, but who wants reliability???? your young with not much money, id make sure the car is sound first, no point putting a grand into a car that has rust althrough it!!!
ideas for a 250 xflow, put an efi head on it & abit of a cam, balance the bottom end, my mate just did a mark 3 with a 250 xflow, thats what he did, he got 210 at the wheels!!!
i hate when people look in the wrong place first, dont worry about wheels, make it a sleeper, get a nice engine & leave it stock looking, wider tyres will help with traction issues, on standard wheels i think you can stretch it to 205's (not sure though)
now onto the gearbox, my mate also put the supra option in, it was abit of stuffing round, but he did it himself (he's a boiler maker) so i guess you could probably sort it out yourself, the problem i found being in the car is 1st gear is completely lame.....its so short that if you have decent power, 1st gear is spend on tread & thats about it, though the short ratio's does help with fu(king fast acceleration!!!!!
