MkII Cortina Ideas

Hey,

I'm currently after info/ideas/places to search for a few bits to do with my Mk II Cortina 440. Especially a steering rack conversion and the front brakes.

Im looking for a decent set of brakes to fit under 13 inch rims, the most probable at the moment is the mix of BMW 3 series discs and Volvo 4 spot calipers (Escort mod - see www.osella.com.au or www.spannerfodder.com). If anyone knows of something better, or different, it would be most helpful - there is some modification to bolt holes to get this one to fit.

I'm also looking for a NSW RTA legal rack conversion - or someone who has done it previously. I know the guys in England basically bolt a MkII Escort rack in, but I'm yet to see any conversion under NSW law. Clive from the ACT Small Ford Club used a Honda Zot rack in a MkII and it was legal in ACT, so that is promising if I can get hold of a Honda Zot rack. If you have any other ideas, it would be most welcome.

As for the rest of the Corty, its all been basically sourced. Its dropped (2inch lower coils, lowering blocks), and wearing original steelies + hubcaps for the sleeper look. I've dropped in a Toyota 2TGEU (1600, 2v, twin cam, injected), a Supra 5 speed, and will be running an RA23 Celica LSD once the toothpick (Cortina diff) breaks.

With any luck I'll break 200 rwhp. To do that the 2TGEU will get a stroke to 1800cc, and the S15 Silvia turbo I have set aside. The Toyota boys I've been talking to are claiming 225+rwhp from a standard bore/stroke 4AGE with a S14/S15 Silvia turbo, so it looks possible. I'll be sticking with the leaves for a little while, but I already have a race car engineering firm lined up to do a 5 link, when the lack of traction becomes too much

L8a,
Prud

I'm also lookin at a steering rack conversion, but for my mustang. I was at a suspension place in Queanbeyan, and they said there was an article in Street Machine Magazine about a mob that does conversion kits. If I can find out more, I'll let you know.

Your Corty sounds like a potential weapon!

Hey,

You wouldn't happen to know which issue would you? Even roughly, just so I know where to start looking in "the Library"....

<--------- has pretty much every issue since Van Wheels.

Re: MkII Cortina Ideas

I was told it was either the current issue or the one before. Just got back from the news agents - and it is not in the July issue. So I'm trying to track down the June 03 issue.

Apparantly it is towards the back of the mag. even if they don't list a corty, it might be worthwhile giving them a call. It is a bolt in rack and pinion unit.

Re: MkII Cortina Ideas

Hey,

When shes back on the road - hopefully September - I'll post some pics. Its taken me 7 years on a Uni student budget, so a few more months wont mean much to me. Sure looks horn in the fresh undercoat tho! Much better than the standard 3 different colours tinged with rust that she used to be.

At the moment, shes still in pieces, awaiting funds to finish the wiring (et al) for the EFI conversion. Then comes the Purple Paint Job I want before she goes for a blue slip. Will be Phantom unless something else catches my eye - doubt that, Phantom is rather gorgeous, and would look excellent on a dropped badgeless Corty. The only chrome left on the car is the grille, bumpers and locks (front bumper may be calling the shed floor home soon, haven't decided).

The turbo wont be going on the side of the 2TGEU until everything else is in order, so it wont be that quick to start with, but it will be before too long. I want a proper set of brakes, suspension I'm happy with (not bad now, but it could be better), and a nice set of rims. Then I'll pull the motor and rebuild it for a turbo.

BTW EBXR, any luck finding that SM issue? I must be blind. Went through a stack of them and didn't see anything...

L8a,
Prud

Re: MkII Cortina Ideas

Get rid of the front bumper bar, looks good without it.

Re: MkII Cortina Ideas

Hey Prud, I'm still having trouble locating the article. I'm going to head back out to the shop and see if I can borrow his copy and photocopy it.

Re: MkII Cortina Ideas

Well Prud, your mark 11 cortina is so different from mine that it's not funny. I'm trying to go for concourse
so I'm pleased that I tracked down an original water
bottle for my hand pumped windscreen squirter. Mind
you I would dearly love to lighten the steering on mine, it realy drives like a tank.

Re: MkII Cortina Ideas

Prud, here's a site I found on a mk1 with a jap engine conversion. Anything you can do to a mk1 can be done on a mk2 and some things are easier. Hope it helps for ideas. I'd love to do a SR20DET in a mk2 2door one day. Just hard to find a good example. Is yours a 2door?
