Power Steering TD 1977

My lad has a 77 TD wagon (250 motor). wants to change to power steering.
Anyone know if it can be done and what to get to do the change over?

Any help or suggestions appreciated in advance.

Re: Power Steering TD 1977

TD's never came with P/S so you will have to use it from a TE or TF. They are quite rare as the Torana brigade us them to convert to power steering.

You possibly could adapt a P/S rack from another car that has a front mounted rack such as Subaru, Volvo & some Nissans.

I have a complete Volvo P/S setup that I was going to adapt to my Capri but it won't clear my RH engine mount.

PM me if you are interested in having a look at it.

Re: Power Steering TD 1977

te or tf front end are completely different to a td so the power steering is not compatible. jim is right in that they never came out factory however the mk4's and 5 in nz and england have the same front end as mk3(our tc/td) and did have power steer so if u'll need to locate a rack overseas. pump etc is a no brainer using falcon stuff.

Re: Power Steering TD 1977

I knew that there were some major differences in the front end between TC/TD and TE/TF such as the engine mounts bolting directly to the body rather than the cross member on the later ones but did not realise the rack was something that would not just bolt up.

You learn something every day.

Re: Power Steering TD 1977

Thanks for the info guys, James is now considering just a stock restoration and moving to a Falcon of some kind (yet to decide) for a work over job. Even so I know some people in NZ so might just see if they can track one down to suit and see how much it will cost.

Thanks for the replies.
