TC 4Cyl to 6 Cyl conversion

Howdy.

I currently own a 1974 TC cortina XL station wagon. It has a 2.0lt mated to a 4spd manual. The 2 lt has a cracked head and I was wondering if it is viable to install a 4.1lt six into it? I am aware that the bonet on the six's is different as well as the suspension and brakes.

my questions are: Is the firewall on the six's different to the 4's? will the engine mounts be the same? Should i use a 4.1 from a tc/td or a crossflow from a X d/e/f falcon? Also is the 4spd gearbox the ones used in the falcon six's of that era or is it only a 4 cyl gearbox that isn't strong enough for a six?

If someone has done this conversion before and would be able to outline all the dramas and things that have to be changed that would be much appreciated.

If it's not possible I may just have to settle for a second hand 2lt and bore bore bore!!!

Cheers

Damo

Re: TC 4Cyl to 6 Cyl conversion

there are alot of differences. the firewalls are different. if u have the cut-out behind the rocker cover then it's a 6cyl firewall. if the firewall(at the top of the booster bracket runs straight across then u have a 4cyl firewall. it's hard to describe so i've got a couple of photos from the last time i explained this to someone. if u have the 4cyl one, it'd be easier to sell the car and buy a 6cyl cortina.

if u have the 6cyl firewall: u'll also have to chop out the radiato support panel to accomodate a radiator. the gearbox's are different, the rear mount for the gearbox is in a different position so u'll have manufacture something there and the diffs are different too.

apart from that there are a few small things ie:accel cable, hoses, exhaust etc

the best way to do it is have a another car or wreck u can rob all the bits off.

hope that helps
