upgrade Falcon -> Cortina?

Right I'm getting sick of my bloody XD. I shoul have given up on it months ago, when I blew the engine and box a month after I got it rego'd. NOW I need to get a complete brake overhaul, $800 for new front rotors, bearings, pads, etc. And a bit of a grind of the drums. It's running alright on straight gas, but I figured with prices inconsisently over $0.50 (not happy) in Canberra a smaller, lighter car would be a good idea.

There's a TE/F (I can never tell) sitting behind me, hasn't been moved for AGES, so I'm hoping that the engine is dead cause then I can literally drop in my reco'd alloy head and run it on gas, yeah?

Is there anything about corty's I should be aware of that either break or are bloody hard to fix? How much can I rip off the falcoon?
