Re: your cortina what mods

I'm thinking of crossing over to the dark side (building a turbo6) What needs to be done to a 250's bottom end to handle some big boost? eg rods, what fits them without needing custom pistons? I've got a turbo big enough to make some big hp. The C4 behind the 302 will handle it and the B/W diff will have no probs at all
Cheers Brett

Yeah i've heard that. Last months Street Machine had a feature of MR250's XF he used them too. I was thinking if I could just use standard hp bits it'd work out cheapish to do. I'm going to try my engine with the new heads i'm working on first, then if it's not fast enough i'll think about a turbo 6 or put the other heads back on (lower compression) and use the turbo i've got on the 302.

Re: your cortina what mods

Is that all in the standard cortina diff?, did you put it all together your self? If you had a shop do it what did they charge?

Also for dummies like me what is a full spool ?

Also i am desperately chasing a set of those saab rims, if you find out what model they are from or know of anyone that has a set for sale please let me know.

cheers

Re: your cortina what mods

A full spool locks both wheels so they always turn together. Where as a open centre only one wheel has drive eg one wheel spins in a burnout :), an LSD will allow both to have drive until the car goes around a corner or with light load. Mini spool is held in the diff the same as an lsd or open centre by either 2 or 4 pins but the full spool bolts straight to the larger diff gear so it eliminates all the bits that break. Some don't like them for street use most of all the RTA. A full spool i've found much nicer to use on the street then a mini. You can also get a detroit locker which is much better then a lsd as they dont wear out and start to spin one wheel and are also ment to legal for road use. LSD also can't handle heaps of horsepower hence the use of a spool. Hope this is clear enough to understand someone else might be able to shed a little more light on this subject. A friend of mine set the diff up as a favour for me. Any diff shop can do this set up.

Re: your cortina what mods

I have a mini spool in my ute atm, and would never use one in a street car again. gives good traction compared to a single wheeler and is great fun in the wet. Is a full spool much "smoother" than a mini spool?

Re: your cortina what mods

Yeah mine seems to feel a lot smoother then the mini spool I had. Mine was only a 2 pinion so that might have had something to do with it as well. Mine is just the odd weekend car but I'd still have one in a daily driver. I'm not a big fan of LSD's
