i need advice on my engine...

its currently a 3.9 CFI.......

i have sourced a EF XR6 4.0L (115,000kms roughly) motor $1550 complete minus
the wiring loom and computer (damaged)

i have also found a Multipoint Injection setup
the complete setup to do the conversion for $250

also available is an EL XR6 head complete
with cam etc e.g in running order but
condition is unknown yet. $450

now the fun part...what i need to know from you guys is if its worth converting the current 3.9 cfi to multipoint and adding the EL XR6 head
or just dropping the EF XR6 engine in?

if i do decide to drop the 4.0L in will i need to change the computer and wiring loom? i know there are many posts regarding this matter but i need a DIRECT tip since i still don't understand how stuff works conversion wise... :(

your help will be very much appreciated

p.s my 3.9 CFI engine has 157,000kms on it at the mo and has noisy lifters

drop the EF motor in. remove the coil pack ignition, and run a dizzy setup, use an EA MPFI ecu+loom and rig up a shift light to switch the runners

i sorta know what you mean walki heh but wtf are runners and shift lights? the EA MPFI ecu and loom should be easy to obtain... i am not sure what the coil pack ignition is though...is that what comes with the CFI? i think i heard someone say that the distributors need to be changed (CFI to MPI)..

oh by the way walkinshaw i wasn't bein rude with the WTF thing... i am just car illiterate! please guys any advice, if I was to choose an option, i'd probably go with the EF but i am worried about the missing loom and ECU...but i'm assuming i can put in an EA MPI or even EF/EL XR6 loom and cpu in? fuel pump has to go too eh?

No problem mate.

ok first off, my car.

EA II, EA 3.9 engine, EF inlet manafold+pipes, EL mpfi dizzy, EL ECU+loom (full EECV system).

Now.....

the EF motor has coil pack ignition rather than dizzy. This is basicaly a bunch of capacitors fired from a crank angle sensor, rather than a coil+dizzy. To use the Coil pack ignition (EF/AU/BA) you need to run the 100pin ECU, which is 200% not compatable with any EA/D/L electrics ( I TRIED!!)

OK, what you would need to do to install the EF XR6 engine.

1) remove coilpack + CAS + EF injection loom.
2) Install Dizzy+coil
3) install EA MPFI loom (with mods to ICS wiring conector)
4) install EA MPFI ECU+Loom
5) install Engine
6) rip of some nice burnouts.

Good luck dude.

and yes soruce a 4L or v8 Fuel pump and ditch/sell your CFI one.

ohhhh yeah. Also the EF/L/AU manafold is a dual runner setup that is switched from long to short runners at 3800rpm. This was done to enhance low end torque in the engine as the cam was of larger profile and would have losed low down power to the preceded ED engine if the origional MPFI manafold was retained (i think that was some of the reason)

any way..........

the butterfulys are vaccum opperated by a VVS (located behind the window washer bottle. This is triggered by a pin out on the EF/L ecu's and unfortunatly EECIV's dont have this. The way to activate the VVS is to use a shift light activator from jaycar or the like. Set it up to switch the VVS on at 3800rpm instead of say flashing a shift light.

thanks for your help im learning heaps from this!! so what is a CAS? and is the EL dizzy and coil just a simple bolt on?

would it be alot less mucking around if i just tried to source an EB or ED XR6 engine?

if you could get an EB/D/L xr6 motor it would be easier. However, the price premium of an XR6 motor over that of a standard EF/L motor imho isnt waranted.
