EA Turbo Project Questions

Hey Guys,

At this stage it looks like my loan is a goer, so things are going to start happening soon.
I want some advice on the running gear of the car. Let me know what you think.

1. What manifold/turbo setup should I run?

I don't want to go spastic with boost, but I want to be making decent power. I'm aiming for about 250-300rwkw. I'm thinking the XR6 Turbo exhaust manifold might be a good start. Does anyone know if they are a decent design and if they can be had at a reasonable price?

2. What sort of engine management should I run?

I have looked at the Wolf3d and EMS units, had anyone had any experience with these? Which would be best for my application? Is the EMS unit worth the extra $500 asking price?

3. What sort of mods should be done to the fuel system?

My boss is going to make me a stainless surge tank cheap, so that has that covered. What size injectors should I be running and what mods should be done to the fuel pressure regulator? Should anything more be done to the fuel system?

4. What tranmission should I run?

I really would prefer a manual box, but I may have to look at an auto if I can't find a decently priced manual that will handle the power. A BTR auto would be hard to set up as well, due to the aftermarket ECU.

Sorry about all the questions peoples, but I want to do this right. It's a lot of money at stake if something goes wrong.

Regards
Daniel

Re: EA Turbo Project Questions

Not too worried about insurance at this stage. Won't need it comprehensively insured as it won't be a daily driver and I probably won't find anyone to insure it anyway! lol.

Re: EA Turbo Project Questions

how about a garret gt 30????? would be ideal for ur application although they are quite pricey how big is ur budget??? Would be better off getting a manifold made up as the xr6t would be $$$$$ i think from ford anyway. Speak to LWRDEF about making the stock injectors flow higher he was telling me this once then all ull need is a good fuel pump % regulator and that SHOULD be enough wolf 3d's should be enough as for the gearbox keep the t5 till it blows :) then get a t5z???? apparently these have thougher internals. Are you planning on modding the engine in any shape or form??? Ohh by the way for gt 30 u are looking at around the 2k mark brand new or u could go for a t4 for about $800 of ebay. Im trying to source a garret gt 42/45 myself :)

Re: EA Turbo Project Questions

I was thinking about a T4. My budget is reasonable, but I don't want to spend money where I don't have to. The engine is going to be rebuilt using an ACL race series rebuild kit. The pistons will be modified to lower compression and it'll be fully balanced. The head is also getting a port and polish job.

Re: EA Turbo Project Questions

Thanks Gambit, I'll do that.

What do you guy's think of this turbo? Can anyone explain what the A/R ratios mean? I sort of know what they mean, but it's still pretty fuzzy......lol.

Re: EA Turbo Project Questions

You may also wanna talk to the troutman, who in turn will probably refer you onto gm_dstroyer......he knows his shit mate.

I had a small build plan made for when I decided to go turbo....if it ever happens.....but basically I'd be running a T04, US EEC 4 and tweecer, supra turbo 5 spd, bosch fuel pump etc.....didnt ever look into the specifics of injectors etc, but by using the EEC and tweecer i could have used anything really.

Have a look at the market place for those manifolds EB six on Nos or whatever his username is....they aint a bad thing (might be in the archives now however)

Re: EA Turbo Project Questions

So far the TO4 looks like the go. I am waiting on a price for the Supra conversion and if it's fairly reasonable, I think I'll go that way. Failing that, possibly a toploader, but I'm not 100% keen on them being 4spd and linkage setup all. Otherwise, I'll go for a BTR auto, but I have a feeling getting the trans computer to function correctly with an aftermarket ECU might be difficult and I'd really prefer a manual.

So far I think I'll be using the Wold3D or EMS computer setup. There is someone on here that sells adapter looms so it plugs straight into the existing loom and supplies fuel/spark maps for a stock EA, so that way I wouldn't be starting from scratch.
