EF Falcon GLi Turbo

I just "inherited" my old man's EF Falcon GLi. It's got roughly 275,000kms and is totally bone stock 4.0ltr with Auto transmission. Every now and then, my mates and I run a few little car mod challenges and they just planted me with a Turbo Falcon challenge. Basically, I want to turbo my Falcon and produce a pretty loud intercooler fluttering sound.

I'm looking at Snort Performance turbo kits for EF Falcons. Do you think I should go for the Stage 3 Turbo Kit for $3500? Will this kit give me what I'm looking for...or will I have to add anything else at what rough cost?

I'm not really after a insanely fast car, I just want to get the fluttering sound. Yes, I know you think 'ricer' or the like, but its just a fun challenge to fill some time and get some attention over the holidays.

Any force fed 4.0 will go off its nuts..Yep you also need to buy an ecu and atleast 36 Lb injectors and better fuel pump...See Corral for injectors [$350Au landed] EMS/ Wolf $1500..

"Go off its nuts"...good thing? or bad? Recommend any specific ECU and what rough cost? Call me a noob, but I didn't understand the "EMS / Wolf $1500" part of your message. Please explain? Thanks for your help!

Re: EF Falcon GLi Turbo

To run a low boost setup you will need a piggy back ecu ( Engine Control Unit )to run with your factory unit ( minium, a stand alone ecu will be better for future tuning however but as said above at a cost of 1500! ), the piggy back ecu will just control the spark and fuel, the rest of the engines management will be left up to the stock ecu, the piggy back units start at around $700 one of the better and easier units is the " Intercepter" by Haltech and will set you back $1050 plus installation.
On a stock engine with low boost the 4.0L 6 pot has been known to produce in excess of 200RWKW as long as its intercooled and running the appropriate fuel injectors, I am currently building a setup for my Fairmont using a Hitachi T4, stainless inlet, thick copper head gasket to lower compression, a piggy back ecu and 13B rotory injectors.
Dont forget to factor new exhaust system, intercooler piping and turbo plumbing into your pricing, you may also need to flush your radiator and if the engine is beginning to show its age you might want some fresh rings and bearings in there , There will always be something small you'll need which will add to the cost of building this setup so the kits offered are of great value if they come with all that is required for the install ( check it out first though ).

cheers let us know how it turns out mate.

Re: EF Falcon GLi Turbo

Wow, this all tends to add up :O. So the list currently goes as:

Turbo Kit
Intercooler plumbing
Piggyback ECU
Injectors

Is it necessary to buy a new exhaust system? I am abit short on the budget because I'm also looking at new bodykit, rims, paint job, etc. so I really only want to get what's necessary. As said before, I'm not really after a Dyno King or anything, just something for a little but of fun until I can get a new car later on.

Also, how are Turbo Falcons with fuel consumption? Do they drink really badly? My car now gets me roughly 350kms (+/- about 50kms) out of about 50 litres of fuel (combined highway and city...but mostly city). What approxiamate figures should I be expecting after the force feeding?

why dont you just put an air tank in the boot hooked up to a blow off valve in the engine bay, activated by a switch on the clutch or on the dash???

Re: EF Falcon GLi Turbo

the exhaust will have to be changed when you put the turbo on for the wastegate outlet so you will have to account for that in your budget to
