Hello all
I have just purchased a new to4b turbo($600) off ebay that i wish to fit my EF Falcon for a lazy low boost setup 5 psi max, i have had some experance with turbos before but not efi turbos. the car already has Au2 xr6 4pintel injectors ,Au2 xr6 head ,cam ,rockers, xr6 fuel pressure reg, but i need to know if the factory computer/map sensor can handle 5 psi boost safely?, and is there any way of changing the ignition timing of the engine for boost conditions? like fooling the computer using resistors ,pressure switches, playing with cam sensor/ crank angle sensor?
i will fit a inline fuel pump ,colder spark plugs,air/fuel ratio L.E.D guage, water injection, and what ever you guys suggest is the best possible path for the EF , i do realise that most of the posts here have heaps of turbo info on other models, but silly me had to pick the hardest one to turbo using the stock computer, but where there's a will there's a way
lots of thanks for any help on this subject

5psi could be done on a factory computer, theres no need for an aftermarket computer at 5PSI. Personaly I'd be getting a chip or something to be sure you aint gonna detonate and allow it to be tuned properly.
An inline fuel pump wont be necessary for such a low PSI figure.
If your T04 internally gated? I have seen them on Ebay and was curious wat you get for your money.
Zoom magazine done a feature on making an XG ute Turbo, perhaps you could track down the copies of that, but it consisted of a cheap yet reliable twin turbo setup that produced so much torque they were thrashing the rear treads at only 3,000 rpm, as for your ECU , chip torque can rewrite or remap your current stock unit to redily accept the low boost setup your considering.
Next time i'm on i'll give you a phone number on a guy to call for the best setup at good prices.
Good luck.
i did not know that the factory computer was reprogramable? as for the turbo i will have to fit a large external wastegate.make manifold and all plumbing but being a fitter & turner for engineering company that wont be a problem
thanks for all the input i'm sure this wont be my last post on this subject :wnc:
again thanks
ok ill keep an eye out for the mag, there must be some way of fooling these efi computers to some extent because ive played with a few different systems over the years and you would be amazed what you can do. i'm going to make a u-shape turbo adaptor so i can still use the stock exhaust manifold (i know its not the best setup but like i said iam going for a lazy turbo so it comes in about 3000rpm good for highway overtaking and wont tear my transmission out off the line)i'm still looking for 40 -45mm secondhand external wastegate anyone? :wnc:

Ive got an old ZOOM magazine lying arounnd (the Ford 6 tuner edition) that says the Ford ECU can be tuned. It goes on to state the "a special expander board is required due to Ford equiping these boards with proprietry hardware. While there isnt many tht can real-time tuen them, those who can get decent results."
You really should go for a half decent knock up manifold. Why not have a go yourself. Even with a decent sized turbo (TO4) your car will be making boost at 1500-2000.
Even the XR6Turbo kicks in around there and its a big bastard GT40.
If Manifolds are a problem i have a friend that makes custom surge tanks, intercoolers, manifolds ( blower inlets, turbo exhaust and turbo inlets) From steam pipe bends and stainless, he has very reasonable prices as well, he made the complete 2 1/2 in twin exhaust system on my corvette including the tuned length extractors for $1150 my last system was the same but with half the quality and it cost $950.
I'll get back to you about the wastegate, i built a toyota Hilux 2wd , TO4 Suck through setup with and SU carb it had a delta race gate on it i bought 2nd hand but it was still new unused, i'll speak to the guy i sold the car to he pulled it all out and fitted a V8.
excellent hope the wastegate comes through! and i hope "fast fords" scanners working coz i just got the mandrel bends to cut and make dump pipe ,i have made a flange for the turbo ,and found a v-band turbo clamp at a truck joint but had to make a bevel shaped flange for the turbo \ dump pipe to join correctly , anyway heres the photos of the turbo""" :wnc:
just scored some BAturbo injectors ($100) and have taken them to a injection friend of mine to get them flowed to see how much different they are compared to stock injectors and if any of you clever people can tell me how to retard the ignition timing under boost and not use a chip or piggy back computer? i know its a big ask but i am willing to stuff about to acheive my goal.
Do you really need bigger injectors for 5psi? I've heard 5psi can be bolted straight onto a falcon without any mods whatsoever. Could be wrong though.
I'll scan the article when i get my new modem but you are probably better off getting T Terror to scan the actual article as the revised article is fairly brief.
T Terror i'd be very interested in reading the article about tuning a Ford ECU, would save me jumping ships and running a Holden DELCO computer!
i have picked up the BA turbo injectors from the injection specialists and they tested them against standard AU injectors and they said the turbo ones flowed nearly 30% more :wnc:
The B.A injectors have different connectors and they'd be 30 % over A.U..
A 5 Lp set up with T4 is no where near its efficiency range if you can read there flow maps...5 Lp would be close to surge line...

FastFords, sorry for the late reply but I was installing my new comp (YAY!).
The article I have is teh Ford 6cyl tuner issue of ZOOM issue 74. It mentions the computer twice:
STAGE 1- 120kw@wheels "open the airbox and spend some time (and money) having the EEC-IV or EEC-V management system calibrated.
A special expander board is required to program these computers due to Ford equipping them with proprietry hardware. While there arent too many that can actually real-time tune them, those that can often get decent and tangible results".
Stage3- 200-230kw at wheels (at this stage turbos are employed)
"One thing the Workhorse Wakeup did teach us was the limit of the stock engine management system. For anything bigger than 36lb/hour fuelinjectors and more than about .69bar of boost pressure, the factory computer, no matter how well modified, starts to run out of range and resolution.
Hope that helps.
ill chuck up some pics soon. My scanner cord is too short so i gotta buy a longer one first.
Ok I have got the new scanner hooked up and scanned the relevant articles. If anyone wants to see every mention of the Turbo Falcon from ZOOM then tell me how to lower the size of the image! I saved them as low quality (which is still pretty good) and the biggest one is about 300kb.
I am very interested in the retuning the EECV, might have to ring around and see if anyone can do it and for what cost.
If any of them don't work email me and I'll fix it
Is it just me? I cannot see them?!
What are the specs? What sorta turbo? is it internally gated?
Who provided the manifold?
Did you get the Ford computer re tuned or was it left as is?
Ta
Cam
