Just curious as to whether there's some sort of magic equation to determine the best compression ratio for a certain level of boost?

Hmm that depends.. Like 4 valve motors can get away with heaps of compression.
But as a rule of thumb under 9 to 1 0ver 10 Lp imo...Unless you have good management and fuel is up to it etc....

Ray Hall Turbocharging has a few online calculators you might find helpful. I think the site is www.turbofast.com.au

Also while you there check out the turbocharged boats :)
