they 'purge' the system as when the cars are sitting on the start line for a while the engine heat turns the no2 in the line into a gas which is what they don't want. It is then 'purged' into atmosphere to get all the gas out of the line and ensure there is liquid ready to go when they nail it.

Thats the best i could do so early in the morning, can anyone else add to that or explain it a bit better?

Purging the line is line bleeding a fuel system.

Due to heatsoak, leaks, etc. Purging is done to have absolute fresh supply of nitrous at the time you flick the switch.

Rather than a small delay of nitrous supply which could be detremental to the engines performance/and life.

Ricers think it looks cool too

yeah it does look cool coming out of the Snakes mouth.

I have seen it done, but making it go out of the car seams a bit ricey.

ive seen a 351 rx4 with 2 shot out the bonnet close to the screen, looked odd till i found out what it was for. Why is it bad for your engine if u cant purge the line?

I dont think you would get the full advantage of the NOS.
Nos is added to the engine as a gas and it expands when it gets hot taking heat, if it is already a gas in the lines it cant expand to its full potential.

Thats the reasoning i can see for it.

I never purged my nitrous because that tiny minute fraction of a second delay in the hit - which i could never decern anyway - i figured would help my car hook up better off the line.
