Re-building bottom end on an EF XR6 for a Powerdyne Supercharger

Heya guys,

I'm planning to get a CAPA kit fitted to my car in the near future, but first, i have to address the burning oil issue i have. I don't have any oil leaks, so my dad and i have decided the oil must be coming through the rings.

My XR's engine is VERY clean, with no oil leaks. It's just had a top end re-condition/rebuild, head is new, ported, polished, new cam/valves/valve springs. It's done 240,000km's (I know, lotta kays, but i've been nice to it!)

So, my question is, when i rebuild the bottom end, i wanna build it strong enough to run a 6-9psi powerdyne supercharger (I'm going the powerdyne, cos i don't wanna stuff around with oil lines, the powerdyne has a built in cooler feature(?) )

I was planning on forged pistons? Do i need to/should i change the conrods/crankshaft, etc?

Thanks in advance,
Yagz

You won't need anything stronger for 6-9psi. Rebuild to stock specs and you'll be fine.

If you were going 12psi or higher (which you may in the future) then consider something tougher. Then you'd look at forged pistons and h-beam rods and probably get the crankshaft balanced, shotpeened and nitrided.

But, yeah, not needed for 9psi.

I've heard a few people say an ACL race series rebuilt kit is the way to go. I'm not sure what it includes but just do a search on the net.

Depends how much you want to spend?? Considering these short blockes can be bought for under $600 in good nick..
ACL race series pistons "low" compression[may have to use oversize EA with deeper dish] ARP big end bolts and "BALLANCE"..
Next step could be fitting some AU rods and ACL pistons ????As these motors are designed or engineered from Ford to take alittle more rpm/power...Slghtly longer rod and piston pin in different location...The ACL race kit comes with bearing, rings, hi volume oil pump gasgets etc..

spend atleast 5 grand on the engine, becuase once you get the power going you will want more, do it first time right.

yep!

Get the whole thing done properly. A good idea may be to bore the block 3thou(iirc) and fit 0.5mmOS ACL Race EA pistions. Balanced ED Crank, Rods, flexplate, pistons. High Vol Oil pump.

Even go as far as machining the dish larger in the piston dish, to lower the compression. Once youve had 6psi you WILL want 26psi

Hehe, as much as i'd love to spend more/get more boost, i really don't think i would.. I just wanna beat the son of a !@#$% who overtook me and pulled 5 times harder than me in a V6 Vectra!!!

I really just wanna run 6-9psi so i can run 13's(?) and have a nice daily driver than doesn't guzzle the fuel.. Are bigger injectors/better fuel pump necessary for 6-9psi? I've heard people say yes and no, but i spose i don't want the car leaning out..

I don't want to run an intercooler, simply because i don't have the funds at the moment.. Wht i really want to achieve is just a small blown engine, capable of high 12's to low 13's that i won't have to rebuild every 5,000km's cos i'm boosting the shit out of it..

I'll see how i go.. What specs should i consider for the rebuild, such as compression, etc? If i was to purchase a full acl kit, will they supply thicker headgaskets, etc to lower the compression? Will my stock XR6 Head/cam run on 9psi without a problem?

Cheers,
Yagz

Re: Re-building bottom end on an EF XR6 for a Powerdyne Supercharger

I'd be aiming for around 205rwkw for high 12's, maybe more if you still have a stock diff

EB six on NOS has run a high 12 in a EB recently, but thats on a stock motor with T04 turbo pumping 6psi...turbo chargers work better in low psi applications cos they make free power whereas the powerdyne will rob some from the crank in driving it.

Dont think your auto will like whats going on unless you totally baby it and throw on a bigger cooler

Re: Re-building bottom end on an EF XR6 for a Powerdyne Supercharger

Hmm, i thought the auto would handle the ~240kw's without any hassles? I have had a cooler on it all it's life (XR came with a towpack from factory) and i have always serviced it, and it's just been fully rebuilt..
