Re: Re-building bottom end on an EF XR6 for a Powerdyne Supercharger
Don't use a decompression plate at all if possible, they are easier to blow. You really need a intercooler to reliably and consistantly run 12's to 13's in a everyday street setup. I would recomend 30lb injectors at least and aftermarket ecu to make sure the tune is spot on.
Re: Re-building bottom end on an EF XR6 for a Powerdyne Supercharger
Actually a std GLI or ute head is better as it has lower compression[For forced induction]..Dropping pistons down bore or running thicker head gasgets stuffs up quench and looses power..Its best to mill out pistons the same shape as chamber, or atleast mill the centre of piston out..If using EA pistons its not req..I rebuilt my sons ED.XR6 mill and it cost $1300 including ARP big end bolts and ACL race series overhaul kit..Assembled myself..Head was only milled...
Start small and add things as you go..Don't rule out things like i/cooler you may be able to use one from Jap import even if small its still better than none..
You don't realy need to overhaul motor either unless its knocking or has blowby..AS I said these motors sell cheap at wrecking yards..The bottom end is the same XR or Fairmont...

ebxr8240 - you said u rebuilt your son's motor yourself?? When putting it all back together is there anything special that you have to do or can you pretty much just torque all the bolts up to spec and it'll be right? $1300 is a damn cheap rebuild!
I was wanting to do this myself after I put the twin turbo on my car. Eventually I know the motor is going to die from the forced induction (it's close to 300000), so if I got the block cleaned and machined out a bit to accept the oversize EA pistons could I just put it all back together in the garage?
PS, sorry to hijack your thread Yagz PPS, check out ebay for intercoolers, there are some pretty cheap ones kicking around.

The only things you can't do at home are the machining - balancing, boring, decking, etc.
Otherwise go nuts in the garage! Just be sure to torque everything religiously if you're not sure, and you'll be right

Intercoolers new currently have never been so cheap. The companies are trying to undercut each other on price. I have seen brand new 600x300x70mm core intercoolers for $550 including delivery.

The bottle is off to side.We welded two brackets up from front subframe to bottom of i/c and two L brackets from top panel beside headlights..
I'm in the pressess of fitting a different air con compressor where the idle pulley is on drivers side..It has to be fitted from a bolt position from the front much like alternator... As the original compressor won't fit there.. The way the idle pulley does....My pics are too big to down load here...http://www.fordgallery.com/showgalle...00&ppuser=1401 http://au.photos.yahoo.com/kiwi_reign
