stromberg "Power Plus" spark booster... works or hype ?

I was at the melb motorshow yesterday (GOD DAMN that orange GT-P looks awesome :D ) and over the the motor show extra part there were these guys trying to flog this "Stromberg Power Plus" spark booster... its a little black round thing, that you fit b/t the coil and distributor.
claims are 20% power increase, 14% fuel reduction, and $150
from the demo's they had setup, it looked like it really did actually boost the power of the spark, but how can it work with no 'outside' power input... ie how can it boost the power without adding any power from a battery or something.... ??

anyone actually got one and did it work? Also would LPG benefit from a better spark more/less when compared to petrol ?

cheers :)

I belive it is acually another transformer put in series with the coil to boost the voltage. correct me if i'm wrong.
but $150 for a transformer is a rip.

I spoke to the guy doing the demo & queried how the unburnt fuel could be ignited once the air in the cylinder had been consumed or a 2nd flame front could be started on the same stroke and guess what? He didn't know. A bit dodgy if you ask me.

Re: stromberg "Power Plus" spark booster... works or hype ?

If you check out this link in Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Stromberg-Fue...QQcmdZViewItem

You will see that this particular one is just $50, but for 8 cylinder cars without a distributor it will cost up to $100. It tells you everything about it and what it does if you don't know about it.

I'm getting this one for my Cortina, as its converted to LPG. It says how cars with LPG is harder to get a spark, and this will make it easier to start. If I don't end up getting any gas savings and extra power, and all this ends up doing is making it start easier in the morning, then I think it was $50 well spent.

Sounds a little like 'direct hits'. If you look that up it seems to be some sort of step up transformer and spark gap. The higher the voltage when the spark jumps the gap, the faster the charge is dissipated. Equals greater spark.

i suppose you could open your plug gap up a bit, exposing more spark to the fuel/gas.

Well, I have the Stromberg in and I have to say that its much better starting in the morning. Its not almost instant like a petrol car (as mine is LPG) but I would say its shaved quite a number of seconds cranking it.
