Re: supercharge vs turbo ?

Read this very informative.
http://www.turbomustangs.com/turbotech/main.htm
Here's an extract

Mechanical supercharging
With mechanical supercharging, the combustion air is compressed by a compressor driven directly by the engine. However, the power output increase is partly lost due to the parasitic losses from driving the compressor. The power to drive a mechanical turbocharger is up to 15 % of the engine output. Therefore, fuel consumption is higher when compared with a naturally aspirated engine with the same power output.

Exhaust gas turbocharging
In exhaust gas turbocharging, some of the exhaust gas energy, which would normally be wasted, is used to drive a turbine. Mounted on the same shaft as the turbine is a compressor which draws in the combustion air, compresses it, and then supplies it to the engine. There is no mechanical coupling to the engine.

Re: supercharge vs turbo ?

Blowers are adjusable via either pulley wheel sizes or a BOV.

Turbo's are better though - they are more efficient. But that's not saying s/c's are bad. Turbo setups tend to cost more too, and as mentioned before, are harder to install.

Re: supercharge vs turbo ?

turbos are tougher IMO. I mean do you really wanna be like all the supercharged ECOTEC V6 commies out there?

Re: supercharge vs turbo ?

Glad someone brought this up. I've just recently been pondering about what would be better for my 250ci XA. or whether it would just be better to drop a 351 into it. Any help would be great.

Re: supercharge vs turbo ?

Ford xr6t is the new cult car and this is because they finally got a power package right, even if de-tuned. The turbo is definetly the best way to go.

Re: supercharge vs turbo ?

turbo's are also a bitt softer on the crankshaft

and can be concealed(to some extent) if you so desire

and quiten down your exhaust, good IMO.

superchargers are just mounted on the engine, turbo installs can be way more creative and unique, blowers are just about all the same, you can gaurantee that others have the same or very similar setup, while turbo's can be very different and require more calculation/trial/design to get right, and will yield better results if done properly.

I say go for a turbo for sure, only downside's are heat and lag! and lack of space and money....

Re: supercharge vs turbo ?

blowers make power from idol where turbos only work top end. blowers drag some HP to run , turbos dont, blowers sound better dump valves dont, blowers are cheaper to set up ( car make depends) turbos need big intercoolers, blowers can be clucth driven so u donr have to run all the time
as the old saying goes,,, injection is nice but i would rather be blown....
