im new to this, im on way to buying a very cheap TX5 Telstar 88 model, the stock turbo has carked it, and i need a rough indication of how much it will cost to get the turbo recond?? plus the engine has pretty much had it (300,000kms recond at 230,000 but not a good job done apparently), gasket manifold and probably head gasket are gone, it leaks oil and water i think and tappets are worn. i am willing to spend $3000 on the car if need be but if it costs more so be it, i've been waiting for a car like this and i am eager to get it to top form.

The prices for new turbo's have dropped lattley! Beeing new there is every chance it will way outperform the std turbo..I would say $1200 to recon turbo where you could buy a new one for that, or atleast under $1500...
For the engine imo I'd go through whole assembly again, checking all clearances..You may need new valve gear as in springs, cam, lash adjusters? Which are not that expensive..Depends how much work you do yourself? But $1500 would come close to reconed shortblock...The tappets maybe rattley due to low oil presure or crap in oil system also?
