Hi

I have had this problem for a little while. I have a 2001 Ford X5 hatch. On and off throught the last year I thought I might have smelled something burning but it has been intermittant. I thought maybe a car infront of me or something, didn't really last long. I could smell it through the vents. My warrenty expired in Oct of 2006, took the car in and had them take a look and they couldn't find anything then.

Recently after all of the snow in the Northeast here, I got stuck, reved the engine good got unstuck and was driving to the store. Within a half of a mile, black smoke poured out of the vents in to the car and it smelled horrible. It only lasted for a few seconds, I pulled over immediatly and asked a guy from Autozone to take a look. He thought maybe a blew a head gasket. There was a bit of oil on the engine and up around the top to the engine.

Took it to the shop, they looked at it and said everything was loose so they tightened it and cleaned the engine. The next day I am driving to work, same thing happened. Took it back to the shop and they thought it might be burning oil off. Told me to let it ride. Drove it for a few more days and just an occasional smell. Only if I have the heater on did it happen, vent or maybe air in the summer, I don't remember back then. Drove it for a few days with no incidents. They did look at the heater...............no water leaks on the passenger side.

No engine light, no oil leaking, no lights of any kind, temp guage stays the same, no funny sounds..................nothing but the smell. I have not had black smoke but still have the smell occasionally.

Any ideas??

Thanks!

Nadine
