Exclamation '91 Escort fuel gauge broken

We have a '91 Ford Escort wagon (1.9L, auto) which we've been saving for our son to drive once he gets his driver's license at the end of the month. The fuel gauge consistently registers empty, even after putting 10 gallons of fuel in the tank.

We've taken it to the shop. They say that the sender is okay and the fuel pump is working and that the problem is in the gauge in the instrument cluster.

There are apparently two kinds of instrument clusters for the '91 Ford Escort: ones with a tachometer and one without. Each instrument cluster uses a different plug to connect the wiring harness to it (so that they are not interchangable).

Ford is no longer making instrument clusters for '91 Ford Escorts and the garage cannot find any in "junk yards". I'm at a loss. Does anyone know of any after market fuel gauges that would be compatible with this car?

I'd prefer my son not to have to estimate how much fuel is in the tank based on how many miles are on the trip odometer but rather focus on his driving (as a new driver).

I'm open to all suggestions. Thank you, in advance.

Man, there has gotta be a junkyard with a locator that will find your part. Call around in the largest city near you for a junkyard part.

Hooking in an aftermarket guage involves some major wiring.

Re: '91 Escort fuel gauge broken

Our garage did check around for local junkyards. Nada. :-|

Do you happen to know if there's an "internet" junkyard search tool? I'll check Google after I submit this reply.

TIA.
