Just wondering how i can tell whats wronge with my a/c on me EA Ghia. I doubt the last owner would have ever regassed it, so im hoping thats all thats needed.
But what i want to know is if theres anyway to check for leaks/cracks prior to going to the a/c shop?
And if it has a leak, is it a replacement job, and prices etc?
Thanks in advance

If you have to get it regassed be warned that the R134a gas runs at a higher pressure than the R12 in your EA. This could cause what happened to me, being that the front seal gives up under the increased pressure. Then it is new air-con compressor time.

I had mine retro fitted at the start of summer. everything is fine. If you get a regas at any decent place they should put in the tracer dye. then all you need is a black light and a dark garage to find the leak, as long as it's not behind the dash.
The aircon also has a pressure clutch which means that you shouldn't dry out your valves and whatnot.
a retrofit should cost about $250, don't use cheep places because they often don't flush out all the old gas properly and yuo can get compatability problems.
My buisness is refrigeration /air conditioning
Dont put Compressed air in the system, always has water in it, and one little droplet of water can cause yuo so many problems. Dry Nitrogen is the best to use, then you can listen for leaks, and use a soapy water over joints to see if they bubble. In a EA it would more than likely still be an R12 system, unless it was retrofitted. All seals will last underthe pressure, the problem being that with R134a, you need a diffent oil, so depending on the type of seal, you may get a blown seal, as the new oil may be incompatable. Really do need someone with guages and a vacumn pump to do the work for you.
Hope this helps
