a quick airbag question that someone may know the answer to.
when a car is crashed and the drivers side airbag has gone off what is needed to fix it? is it a simple thing of repacking the airbag and putting a new cover on or is it a whole new steering wheel and airbag? this isnt just for fords either but i thought the answer would be generally the same over most makes.
anyone know what the right solution is?

you need a new airbag, theres 2 10mm screws behind the steering wheel. so no u dnt have to change the whole steering wheel

ok thats making that a little easier. is this only for Ford or is this most makes, say nissan to be exact? and without going on makes what would an average new airbag cost for say an 8 year old car?
can i scab one from another car that hasnt been crashed even?

take the airbag off then go to a few wreckers and see if they can match it up with something

as far as i am aware, all that is needed is a new airbag (or an unused one), and a reset of the system. Probably a new airbag sensor too for the front of the car.

Rough price for a new airbag is anywhere from $600 - $1500 depending on the car. I remeber a Mazda 929 getting a replacement airbag and it was over $1200 fitted. Expensive little suckers.

To do the job right you dont just change the steering wheel you must all so change the charge system and all of the wirering system you can not in any way use a second hand one bye law it is an ofence for a wreckers to sell you one, i know this as i work in the trade it will also depend if your model had seat belt tensioners and what ever gos with that, i would advise you to go and talk to a Ford dealr ship and get the right advice.

Wouldn't the fact that the airbag has gone off warrant that the car has been written off in the first place? lol

there are 2 kinds of write off. REPAIRABLE write of and STATUTORY write offs. this is a repairable with very minor damage.

you will need a new sensor where the car is hit, airbag, new module, and in some cases new computer for airbag or just reset the old one if possible, also you will need front seat belts.
