is this possible cos im about to purchase a leather shifter?

Yes it's possible, but it's not a straight swap. The AU has a plastic lever mechanism inside the shifter, whereas the E series have a metal rod. Still, anything can be done if you want it done - Falkeen fitted a BA shifter to his AU

i rang brian glynn today and was told that they fit so im not happy,so the next ? is do the el fairlanes have leather shifters.

Yes they do. Not cheap though (I was looking for one when I had my EF Fairmont - around $240 or so, from memory).
