this is a little pet project of mine, I'm wanting to change the standard black power window buttons in my EFII Futura (they're mounted in the centre console side by side and they control the front power windows) to illuminated AUII Fairmont buttons.
I can easily disconnect the EF buttons, but I cant remove the button assembly itself (not game to try until I know for sure this mod can be done). What need to find out is just how the AU buttons are wired up - the ones in the EF just have plugs that go into the buttons, does the AU have this too?
pictures of how the AU buttons are wired and assembled would be great, and anyone with some info that might be able to help would be much appreciated!
I'm fairly sure the button should be individually removable from the console surround ( they are on the el ).
Unless the button is permanently illuminated in the au's i imagine the wiring will be slightly different ( plugs etc ), but not anything you can't work around (splice plugs in etc). altho, you might need to bring in some power for the lights...
ok had a good look, the plugs are different, but the buttons will definately fit in the EF centre console. so if i can work out what wire is what i might be in with a chance......
i have just had my buttons replaced on my drivers door in my au fairmont ghia becouse of the light in them had blown but thay had to replace the whole switch as its a closed unit so u whont be abel to put them in your ef unless u cut your center console and fit the whole au switch unit and u will need new wireing as well

yep i took one of the switches outts Dad's AU2 and figured that one out. If i could somehow replace the connector on the AU2 buttons I reckon it'd work, but that would take a lot of effort. I'm looking at somehow adding lights to the existing EFII Switches.
Are these just backlit buttons that come on with the cabin lights (I've never seen the illuminated buttons in an AU) or is there something else too them (change colour based on whether the window is going up or down)? Either way, this is something I'll have to try.
Ok, the buttons out of Dad's AUII are sealed units - there's no way that I can see that you would be able to pull them apart, meaning if the light in there blows you'll probably need another one.
The only problem with the modification is that the connecting pins for both buttons (i.e. the way the wires 'plug in' to the button) is different - therefore its not just a simple swap.
And unfortunately none of the E series have illuminated buttons - the first to have them was AU.
Hmmm . . . having trouble remembering how well the switches fitted to the console, but I'm wondering if you could mount a light ( maybe a flex neon (!) ), around / under the console, and whether the light would seep around the edges of the switches. Wouldn't give you the up / down illuminated, but might give a nice highlight to the location of the actual switch gear . . . (was going to attach a pic, but it won't let me atm *shrugs*)
To solve your wiring problems, you could probably just use some wires ending in socket / spade connectors as is apropriate for the connectors. Not the prettiest solution, but given the wiring is concealed anyways... At least you wouldn't have to make any real change to the wiring. One point of consideration before attempting this would be to establish how much current flows through the switches ( ie hopefully not the full load that the windows draw - else you would have to be very careful with wiring etc)
