My battery is pretty new and never gives me a hassle during winter but the terminals keep getting a buildup of crap from electrolysis.

dunno if that stops the car from starting, but when i take the connections off and sandpaper all the metal like new, it starts perfectly.

it'll generally be ok for couple of months or so after i clean the contacts. if this is my problem, how can i stop the buildup?

Use those Red and Green washers from an auto store and place them around the terminals. At the moment im just using normal grease and smeared it all around mine on both my cars. No probs!

I just have gold plated battery terminal connections and I have no problem.

Wash it down with hot water. If it keeps building up around terminals it may be over charging...

I have heard hot water with some bi-carb of soda mixed in works great for getting rid of it, don't know what porpotions to mix it in though.

More the merrier, you can even make a paste and smear it on.

try checking that the connections are tight because loose connections will cause a buildup of corrosion forming on the terminals.
